Homicide detectives have confirmed that an 8-year-old girl was shot to death after surviving a auto crash early Saturday morning.

Adkins and her mom, Latoyia Thomas were driving near the intersection of the Sam Houston Parkway feeder and Fuqua Street, when a speeding auto hit their vehicle. The other driver fled in a dark, four-door sedan.

DeMaree Atkins was in the backseat of her mother Toyia Thomas' Black Honda Accord on the Beltway feeder road when two cars traveling south slammed into them, ABC13 reported.

The child was taken to the hospital after the shooting but later died, officers said. Thomas thought the woman driving was stopping to offer help, but things took a deadly turn. 'I pulled her out of the auto; I didn't even know she had been hit. Her mother, whom police did not identify, was uninjured.

In an emotional video posted on YouTube, Thomas said she missed her daughter and pleaded with those responsible to come forward. She remembers seeing a woman step out of a auto and begin firing shots.

"I saw the girl let the window down and point the gun out the window, and she just started shooting", Thomas said. "I said, 'Are you okay?' because she was asleep".

'She loved to go shopping too.

"She was a good girl, honor roll student, full of life".

Police continue looking for the drivers of the Pontiac and the sedan and said they are still trying to determine a motive. "Anything. I miss my baby". "We just don't know". "I wanted to see her get married". Thomas believes somebody knows who the murderer is, possibly the person in the auto she crashed into.
