IMAGES of the British-built Honda Civic Type R have leaked online ahead of yet another unveiling of the vehicle - this time wearing its production skin - at this week's Geneva Motor Show. For instance, it should be the first Civic Type R to need less than five seconds to hit 60 miles per hour and run the quarter-mile in less than 14 clicks. The Civic Type R engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder made in the United States at Honda's Anna Engine Plant in Sidney, Ohio.
Sharing the same fundamentals as the new Civic hatchback, the new Type R has been engineered from the ground up to deliver the most rewarding drive in the hot-hatch segment - both on road and on the race track.
Inside, the standard Civic interior has been upgraded for Type R duty with heavily bolstered sport seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift boot, aluminum shift knob, and aluminum pedals.
The Type R's closest rival, the Ford Focus RS, offers 45 more horsepower and a clever all-wheel-drive system, but it seems the Civic Type R will offer a much different driving experience. A Type R exclusive 6-speed short-throw manual transmission with rev matching through auto throttle-blips will be standard, using a lower final gear ratio for better acceleration response, and a new single-mass flywheel that Honda claims will cut clutch inertia by 25-percent over the old Type R. Its Dual-Axis front-strut setup is meant to limit torque steer; it's essentially the same sort of layout employed by Ford and General Motors in their RevoKnuckle and HiPer Strut suspensions.
What is it: Honda may have been criticized in the past its lack of stylistic imagination and too few performance cars, but the production version of the Honda Civic Type R should silence that noise with the production version that's nearly identical to the concept that had been making the rounds.
The production model looks virtually identical to the Civic Type R concept unveiled a few months back at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
Rory McIlroy leads by two shots at halfway stage
He hit 8 of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens in regulation on his way to a course-record 63 that moved him back into contention. Take each day as it comes. "I tried to approach this week just to see how it went".
That engine is the same direct-injected, VTEC, turbocharged 2.0-liter that's built in OH and installed in the outgoing Euro-spec Civic Type R.
The suspension comprises MacPherson struts at the front and an independent multi-link set-up at the rear with strengthened suspension arms.
It comes with three "enhanced driving modes".
American enthusiasts have been waiting a long time for this.
Aerodynamics are also improved thanks to a smoother underbody, a front air curtain, a lightweight rear wing and vortex generators along the roofline.
"The fastest, most powerful Honda ever sold in America, the Type R caps off the incredible success story of our 10th generation Civic lineup", said Honda exec Jeff Conrad.
