Gold Cup Draw: Mexico to play El Salvador, Curaçao, and Jamaica

Posted March 09, 2017

Curaçao looks like the most accessible team in the group for Mexico when they play at Sports Authority Field in Denver on Thursday, July 13.

The United States will face Panama in the 2017 Gold Cup group stages while Mexico's group will feature a rematch of the 2015 final against Jamaica.

The U.S. team is in Group B with Panama, Martinique and either Haiti and Nicaragua, which will play a two-legged playoff in late March.

The United States will open the CONCACAF Gold Cup on July 8 at Nashville, Tennessee, against Panama, which beat the Americans on penalty kicks in the 2015 third-place match. Martinique and the victor of a playoff between Haiti and Nicaragua round out the group. New manager Bruce Arena will be looking to take the Gold Cup crown on home soil as a way to launch into the run-in for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation, a World Cup that the USA is now not a lock to qualify for. "As I said before, it doesn't really matter, we have to play someone, the teams must be doing something to be here", Whitmore told members of the media, following Tuesday's draw at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara. "We will need to be prepared".

The Gold Cup is CONCACAF's crowning jewel, a tight and focused tournament taking place every two years in order to see who has the best team in the federation (hint: it's nearly always Mexico or the US).

Group A games are set for MLS stadiums in New Jersey, Houston and Frisco, Texas.
