Wildfires destroy almost 1 mIllion acres in Kansas, Oklahoma

The vast majority of the state's burned land is in Clark County, where 30 structures were damaged, said Allison Kuhns, a spokeswoman for the county's emergency management office.

Wildfires have claimed the lives of as many as seven people across multiple states in the central US, consuming as many as one million acres.

The fire continued to burn well into the afternoon according to the Texas A&M Forest Service dispatch page, with more than 92,000 acres burned as of 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The Dumas Complex Fire, in Potter County near Amarillo, ignited amid humidity values in the single digits and winds gusting in excess of 50 miles per hour.

People in Mobeetie and Old Mobeetie were ordered to evacuate earlier in the day Monday, but due to wind shifts the fire missed the area and the evacuation was lifted. Wildfires also ravaged parts of Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma. At last check, the fire was listed as being only 25 percent contained, but that the fire's activity was reported as "low" by the Forest Service.

The Perryton Fire, in Ochiltree, Lipscomb and Hemphill counties is burning in grass and brush and is estimated at more than 315,135 acres.

New estimates indicate Kansas wildfires have burned more than 1,000 square miles, up from 625 square miles.

Fire crews are expecting slower winds as they work to extinguish blazes that have scorched hundreds of square miles of land in four states and killed six people. The grassfire is contained and fire departments have a plan to monitor hotspots.

Officials say one of three wildfires in the Texas Panhandle is now 100 percent contained.

The Clark County fire in Southern Kansas was the most devastating in the state. The "Perryton Fire" covers 315,135 acres, almost half the size of the state of Rhode Island.
