Rather than attending the annual dinner - where the president traditionally is the opening act for a well-known Hollywood comedian and is also the butt of numerous event's jokes - Trump has opted to take a short trip from Washington to Pennsylvania.

President Donald Trump, joined by Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, signs an Executive Order on the Establishment of Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy at The AMES Companies, Inc., in Harrisburg, Pa., Saturday, April, 29, 2017.

The White House Correspondents Association also tapped "Daily Show" comedian Hasan Minhaj - who harshly criticized Trump at the Radio and Television correspondents' dinner a year ago - to perform Saturday.

In Mr Trump's place, actor Alec Baldwin made a brief appearance at the event, dressed as the President.

"Media outlets like CNN and MSNBC are fake news", he said.

Ivanka also didn't say anything about the 100 Days rally President Trump held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and there have been no reports of her attending the event. Trump visited a tool manufacturing company in Harrisburg where signed two executive orders - one directing the Commerce Department and the US trade representative to conduct a review of existing USA global trade and investment agreements and another creating the White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing.

White House Correspondents' Association President Jeff Mason received a standing ovation Saturday after professing that the press is not the enemy of the American people - a reference to an attack line Trump delivered early in his presidency.

It was a preview of a day on which Trump traveled to Pennsylvania to emphasize such priorities as American manufacturing, better trade deals for the US and his underdog victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton in November. Trump said. "But next year, maybe we'll make it more exciting for them in Washington and we'll show up".

Donald Trump has renewed his attacks on media in a rally to mark his 100th day as US President. With that backdrop he signed an executive order directing the Commerce Department and the USA trade representative to conduct a study of US trade agreements.

The large crowd responded with cheers of "USA, USA, USA" as Mr Trump recited his now familiar themes, which include "making America great again", "draining the swamp" and building a wall between the US and its southern neighbour Mexico to stop illegal immigration.

The aim is to determine whether the USA is being treated fairly by its trading partners and the 164-nation World Trade Organization.

"As you know there is another big gathering tonight", said Trump.

"The world is getting the message: if you try to illegally enter the United States, you will be caught, detained, deported or put in prison", Trump said.

For supporter Brian Flook, Trump needs to be allowed some more time to fulfill more of those campaign promises that he touted both in the leadup to the election and through these first 100 days of his term.

In his Pennsylvania speech he returned to many of his popular pre-election talking points.

He said: "In just 14 weeks, my administration has brought profound change to Washington".
