Apple's iPhone 7 was the world's best-selling smartphone in Q1

Xiaomi ranked as the second largest smartphone vendor in India in the fourth quarter of 2016, adding more pressure on other China-based vendors to expand market share in the country, the sources indicated. Up until today, Apple's primary focus has always been the premium segment, realizing the importance of that segment in India, Apple too has made a decision to follow the same bandwagon.

Xiaomi has been pushing a complete lineup of products, including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, air cleaners, set-up boxes and routers, to promote its brand image in India and other overseas markets.

Apple reported that it sold 50.8 million iPhones last quarter, but it does not break out sales on a model-by-model basis. Unlike Samsung's J series which are decidedly more to the budget market, the R9s is a midrange phone with a top-end selfie camera. This price cut will help Apple to remain in the competition with a medium range smartphone. Apple is also in constant contact with the India Government on trying to set up larger plants in India that would require more cooperation to encourage Apple's supply chain from China to open facilities in India. Thus, the company will bring the price of Apple iPhone 5S down. It's also worth mentioning that 68 percent of smartphones are sold in offline retail stores, compared to only 21 percent online. The R9s was priced at 2799 Yuan (around Rs. 28,000) while the R9s Plus had a price tag of 3,499 Yuan (around Rs. 34,500).

In Gujarat, too, it is pretty much the same, barring one minor change-the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 6s have swapped places, with the former selling a bit more.

The 5S features a 4-inch, 1136 x 640 Retina display boasting a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, coupled with a brightness rating of 500 nits and a contrast ratio of 800:1. The contrast ratio is 800:1 and the brightness are 500 nits. The iSight camera has an 8MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture. The phone also has fast charging capabilities and a fingerprint sensor. The only bad news about the Apple iOS market share is that it did decrease to the lowest level since 2014 over in China.

Apple will have to struggle a lot though. Clearly the strategies these companies have used to dominate the smartphone market do not translate perfectly to the Indian market.

All of this bodes well for Apple, especially if it can begin to manufacture iPhones in India in the coming months.
