That's the message John Oliver had for viewers on the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, which addressed the firing of FBI Director James Comey and Trump's freaky threat following Comey's dismissal.
In case you hadn't heard, Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last Tuesday after ordering Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein to write letters arguing for his dismissal.
In the same interview, Trump also admitted that the Russian Federation investigation was part of the decision, Oliver commenting: "What are you doing?"
Oliver started by dissecting the letter the White House released dismissing Comey, which said that the ousted FBI director had informed Trump on three separate occasions that he was not under investigation.
Stephen Colbert's Daily Show Reunion Cements Jon Stewart's Legacy
Crowding onto couches in a morning show style, the group went on to recall fond memories of the show that launched their careers. Colbert then brought his pal Stewart out for a solo interview in which the comedian poked fun at Colbert's recent scandal .
However, Trump "undid two days of damage control in just a few sentences", Oliver said, after he sat down for an interview with NBC's Lester Holt and explained that he had planned to fire Comey all along.
Oliver described Trump's words about the "tapes" as "both a borderline obstruction of justice and the meaningless rantings of a confused, old idiot". "If you said he did it because Comey is 6'8" and Trump feels like a tiny little man standing next to him, I would believe you. "Oliver asked incredulously. "'I was thinking of the Russian Federation investigation when I fired Comey' is the one thing that you are NOT supposed to say out loud". "And it's entirely possible the answer to all three questions are 'yes.'" Unfortunately Oliver may be right - but there's the chance that Trump could still be held accountable for these actions.
Oliver also called out Trump's claim that Comey had told him multiple times on the phone that he was not under investigation. "Apparently, no part of P90X targets the backbone", he adds, taking a dig at Ryan's fitness regimen. "The point is, the founding fathers created a system of checks and balances to limit the power of the president, but it only works if someone f*cking checks and balances - and if you don't, it's no longer on Trump; it's on you".
"I think I speak on behalf of all humanity when I say 'no"!
