Nicky Hayden seriously injured in Italy

The American rider is being taken care of at the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena but the medic's report isn't that good.

"Nicky Hayden's condition remains extremely serious".

"After a few years, we fought for the title down to the last race in Valencia and, unfortunately for me, he won and became MotoGP world champion".

Now riding for Red Bull Honda in the World Superbike series, Hayden was rushed to the hospital with head and chest injuries.

Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team has released a statement about Nicky Hayden, who was involved in an incident while cycling near Rimini, Italy on Wednesday, May 17.

Nicky Hayden's medical condition was called "extremely critical" by the hospital in Italy where he was taken after he was hit by a vehicle while bicycle training Wednesday.

Doctors placed the 2006 MotoGP champion into a medically induced coma, the BBC reported.

His brother Tomy and mother, Rouz, immediately flew over from the United States and went to the hospital to join their closest relative. He was transported to a local hospital before being moved to Cesena.

Italy's Valentino Rossi, the man Hayden edged to win his world title, led the tributes to him on social media.

He spent a further nine years in MotoGP racing with Ducati and the Aspar team before making a switch to the Superbike series and now rides for the Red Bull Honda World Suberbike Team. The Superbike World Championship says the incident occurred Wednesd.

"With a bit more time you start to understand, it's a great shame because Nicky was a great rider", he added.

Wednesday's accident in Italy came just under a month after veteran Italian professional cyclist Michele Scarponi was killed after being hit by a van while out on a training ride on roads near his home.
