Celtics Acquire First-Round Draft Pick

Posted June 21, 2017

The trade that has been speculation for several days became official Monday.

History will say the Boston Celtics passed on the No. 1 overall pick in this years National Basketball Association draft, not only trading it away but doing so in a deal with one of the teams fiercest rivals.

Boston sent its first overall pick to Philly in return for the No. 3 overall pick and future draft picks.

The future pick has protections. If it does not, the Celtics will instead receive either Sacramento's or Philadelphia's first-round pick in 2019, whichever is more favorable. Boston and Philadelphia were obviously willing to swap picks, and as a result, Boston is planning on acquiring Jimmy Butler.

"The odds are in your favor at No. 1, more so than in any other position in the draft, that the player chosen may end up being a franchise-level player", Colangelo said.

"Thursday night will see us take another significant step toward building a successful and sustainable basketball program".

That case, before a federal appeals court in Richmond, had been on hold while the Supreme Court considered the Slants case. Justice Neil Gorsuch joined the court after arguments were heard in the case and did not participate in Monday's decision.

Joel Embiid, the third overall pick in 2014, missed his first two seasons with a foot injury that jeopardized his National Basketball Association career before it started. They drafted Ben Simmons No. 1 a year ago, Allen Iverson in 1996 and Doug Collins in 1973.

There is the outside chance the Celtics hold onto the third pick and select one of Washington's Markelle Fultz, UCLA's Lonzo Ball or Kansas' Josh Jackson.

The Sixers get the player that best fits their needs at No. 1. It's likely that Bryan Colangelo will try to package some of the picks to move back into the first round, but if he doesn't succeed there is plenty of talent to pick from in the second round. Were those reports wrong, or is Ainge just spinning after trading away an opportunity to draft Fultz?

According to Celtics president Danny Ainge, that was never going to be the case. For now, Boston has seven first-round selections in the next three years. "They're getting the player they want", Ainge said, referring to the 76ers. He arrived at the training complex wearing his own Sixers hat, planned to get a cheesesteak after his workout, and took a photo with Simmons, Joel Embiid and Robert Covington.

Fultz's rise to stardom has been rapid. Fultz, who went to high school in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, led the Pac-12 in scoring and finished No. 6 among all Division I players. In his one season with Washington he averaged 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists a game while shooting at 50 per cent from the field and 41 per cent from the three point line.

"I think even before the lottery, we've been evaluating these kids for a couple years, and we felt like it was very close with the top handful of players, and we still feel that way", Ainge said in a conference call Monday after the trade was formally announced.
