Wildfire burning near Breckenridge forces evacuations

The wildfire broke out in the Gold Hill Trail area near Breckenridge, the latest in a string of blazes that have broken out across the state amid extremely hot and dry weather.

The newspaper reports Peak Seven, which is one of the mountains that makes up Breckenridge's legendary ski terrain, is already on full evacuation while a nearby location is on what's called "pre-evacuation".

Viewer Dustin Bates sent us pictures of the smoke billowing up near Fresco and Breckenridge.

The fire has not burned any structures.

At this point - the mandatory evacuation for Peak 7 will stay in effect until noon tomorrow. Evacuation orders were expected to remain in place until midday Thursday. Highway 9 will remain open in both directions, but roads leading into the Peak 7 neighborhood will be closed overnight with checkpoints for residents. Several dozen evacuees reported to the shelter Wednesdy evening.

Yesterday evening, the fire was mapped at 82 acres with some spotting to the north and the south.

Responding local fire agencies: Red, White & Blue Fire; Lake Dillon Fire; Copper Mountain Fire; Leadville Fire Department; Vail Fire Department; Kremmling Fire; North-West Fire; Grand Lake Fire; Town of Breckenridge; Summit County Sheriff's Office.

"Air resources have been working the fire, as well as a load of smokejumpers and a hotshot crew", Inciweb said.

The Type III Incident Command now in charge of the fire is expected to transition to a Type I Incident Command team over the next two days.
