Resigned Mayawati seeks comeback by regaining dalit vote bank

Posted July 19, 2017

After her speech today at Rajya Sabha, Mayawati was seen leaving the house angrily.

"That's why I have made a decision to resign as a Rajya Sabha member today (Tuesday)", she said. "I would like to ask her not try to create unrest in the peaceful state". Immediately after this, Mayawati walked out of the house.

Analysts say the resignation could well spell the end of her parliamentary career.

Leaders of other Opposition parties have tried to persuade Mayawati to change her mind on resigning, but, Mr Mishra said, she is not ready to do so. Behenji's traditional Dalit vote bank slipped to the BJP - the saffron party which Mayawati has termed 'Manuwadi' in many of her past speeches. However, sources in the Rajya Sabha secretariat stated that the resignation letter was against the norms.

She sent her resignation letter to Vice President Hamid Ansari, who is the chairman of the Upper House. In fact, it comes across as a calculated strategy towards reviving the fortune of her party. But her influence has been on the wane in recent years amid the growing influence of the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Bahujan Samaj Party chief alleged that Dalits were being targeted and sought attention of the House over the issue. "She should ensure that the UP government can no longer resort to gimmicks of religion to hide their failures", Dixit said while adding that she and she only remains the only sane voice of Dalits. When I got up to speak, the government did not allow me to complete. "It gives her time to build her support base". By resigning now, she can tell them that by doing so she upheld their pride and Parliament was not a fit place for her. It is for this reason Mayawati is angry because the legacy she inherited from Kanshi Ram seems to be slipping slowly away from her.

Political observers also feel that Mayawati may not have resigned in a fit of rage for being denied a chance to speak on the issue of atrocities on weaker sections, and that it was an outcome of a well-calculated move. She has lost people's mandate.
