Violent clashes erupted in Jerusalem on Friday, as Palestinian protesters opposed to Israel's decision to install metal detectors at the holy site took to the streets.

The Middle East Quartet of Russian Federation, the US, the European Union and the United Nations issued a statement Saturday that expressed great concern for "the escalating tensions and violent clashes" in and around the Old City, where the revered place of worship is located.

The attacker at the settlement was a 19-year-old Palestinian supporter of Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs the Gaza Strip, according to an Israeli military official.

Three Israelis were killed in what appeared to be a terrorist attack in a West Bank settlement hours after three Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli security forces.

Security forces prohibited Palestinian men under the age of 50 from entering Jerusalem's Old City for Friday Muslim prayers this week, .

"The security forces are doing their utmost to maintain security and, to this end, will take all necessary measures", Netanyahu said in a statement. The alleged Palestinian perpetrators were tracked to Al Aqsa where they were shot and killed by Israeli police.

The three Israelis stabbed to death and a fourth who was wounded were from the fenced-in West Bank settlement of Neve Tsuf. The deadly attack took place after three Palestinians were killed by Israelis during violent clashes on Friday.

Sacred to Muslims, Jews, and Christians, Jerusalem is home to the Al Aqsa Mosque, which for Muslims represents the world's third-holiest site.

In a video shot by RT Arabic, crowds of worshippers can be seen trying to flee, as clouds of smoke fill the air and Israeli police move in. Movement of Palestinians from his village was also restricted by Israeli security services.

Earlier on Friday (local time), thousands of Palestinians in Jerusalem and the West Bank clashed with Israeli troops, burning tyres and throwing stones and firecrackers.

After a attack in which two Israeli soldiers were killed outside the al-Aqsa mosque over a week ago, metal detectors were installed at the mosque's gates.

The holy compound includes the Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock.

"During that period, Israeli forces have killed more than 255 Palestinians, a lot of them said by Israel to be attackers". Local reports say it's not certain whether this was coordinated with Palestinian authorities.
