IRNA quoted a statement from the Guard as saying that the USS Nimitz and an accompanying ship came near an Iranian oil offshore platform in the Persian Gulf. A carrier strike group typically consists of five to seven ships that deploy together. The aircraft carrier was accompanied by cruiser. "Shortly thereafter, at a safe distance, the USA helicopter deployed flares, after which the Iranian vessels halted their approach".

In a similar incident, the USS Thunderbolt fired warning shots at Iranian navy boats operating in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday.

After the two parties communicated, the Iranian ships conducted a gun exercise.

'We condemn the hostile and unacceptable action, ' he said of the sanctions.

Today, Iran condemned new sanctions passed by the US Congress against its missile programme, which President Donald Trump is set to sign into law, and vowed to continue it.

The officials said the Iranian boat is believed to have been operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

A US defense official told NBC News that three Iranian boats were involved and at least one of them had sped toward the USS Princeton, which was part of the Nimitz's carrier strike group.

"In a provocative and unprofessional action, the Americans fired flares to warn the Zolfaqar flotilla vessels", the statement added, saying, however, that the IRGC naval forces continued their mission in the zone in the regular manner, disregarding the "unconventional and unusual" moves by the United States forces.

There have been a string of close encounters between USA ships and Iranian vessels in the Gulf in recent months.

The Iranian's decision to fire into the water is perfectly legal, the defense official added.

On Saturday Iran's foreign ministry said the missile program is part of "domestic policy of the country, deterrent and at service of regional peace and security".
