Samsung Galaxy Note 8 hands-on review

Posted August 24, 2017

The Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inch display, while the S8+ has a 6.2-inch display, meaning the Note 8 is slightly bigger than the plus-size Samsung flagship.

The S Pen also comes with a new "Screen Off Memo" feature that lets users doodle on the display while it's switched off, while Live Message allows users to scribble animated doodles and easily turn into a GIF. The screen is Super AMOLED with a resolution of 1440 x 2960 pixels.

That's not the only Note-related infographic from Samsung, though.

The tech leader is certainly hoping it's Note 8 will take a healthy bite out of the high end market, particularly given the innovation around its new cameras, which it describes as world first technology.

Samsung's next Note device was unveiled at an event on 23 August in NY following months of rumours.

Heard about the new Samsung Galaxy Note8? Expect this to air on a TV station near you, especially if you're in the US. It suggests that Note 8 will come with a screen as big as 6.3-inch. The leaked image shows the phone from both back and front.

In my opinion, Canadians get the better end of this deal: whereas the Galaxy S8's version of Orchid Grey is a little purple, and quite desirable, the Note 8 version is muted and more, well, grey.

It's not going to save you money, but it does increase the value and having two bundle options instead of one is ideal in case you already have a 360 camera. First, you can manipulate the intensity of Samsung's artificial bokeh effect in editing after the fact, and second, you can actually pull out the wide angle shot and save it separate of the telephoto one.

The primary camera has 12MP, Dual-Pixel Phase Detection Autofocus, touch focus, face and smile recognition, panorama feature, auto HDR, while the secondary camera has 8 MP with autofocus and auto HDR. And, when used in conjunction with the new Galaxy Note 8, users will be able to much more than produce better digital artworks.

App Pair will allow you to launch two apps at the same time in different windows - so you could have Google Maps in one - and choose your music for the journey in another.

The Galaxy Note 8 has been subjected to many rumours and leaks. Samsung has put itself in an awkward position with the Note line after years of increasingly hard-to-ignore product overlap. The handset is also expected to come with a Snapdragon 835/Exynos 8995 processor paired with 6GB of RAM and 64/128/256GB of internal storage. Switching between them seemed snappy enough, but I'll have to wait until our review unit arrives to really see what Samsung's done here.
