Both had been tropical storms and strengthened into full-fledged hurricanes on Wednesday afternoon.
The initial storm track shows the hurricane is several days away from possibly impacting any land. Instead, it's expected to curve up into the open Atlantic and become a major hurricane - Category 3 or more - with winds up to 115 miles per hour. While it will not have a direct impact on Southeast US unlike Irma, some damage may occur over the Leeward Islands when the storm moves forward.
Jose is not expected to travel in the same direction as Hurricane Irma.
Irma destroyed four of the most solid government buildings on the French-administered portion of nearby St. Martin, an island of about 75,000 people, French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said Wednesday in Paris.

Jose has sustained winds of 75 miles per hour and was quickly strengthening. The National Hurricane Center has not issued any coastal watches or warnings.

Hurricane Jose forms in the Atlantic, far from land and well east of the powerful Hurricane Irma. NHC cautioned "Katia is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 10 to 15 inches over northern Veracruz and eastern Hidalgo, Puebla, and San Luis Potosi". "We can expect additional evacuations as this storm continues to come near our state". The western quadrant of the storm was over the east coast state of Veracruz, Mexico.
