Rohingya Muslims A Threat To National Security, Center Tells Supreme Court

The hunted Shuja - who was governor of Bengal based out of Dhaka - escaped to Arakans where he was betrayed. Thousands of Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar.

Singh said India would not be breaching any worldwide law by deporting Rohingya people as it was not a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention.

Turkey has been at the forefront of providing aid to Rohingya refugees and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he will raise the issue at the UN.

"The Home Ministry has clarified its position through its affidavit (in the Supreme Court) that these are illegal immigrants and they will be deported".

This is especially as the Indian experience with Bangladeshi refugees has not been very good.

The frontier states of West Bengal, Assam, Manipur and Mizoram have been identified as the most vulnerable to infiltration. Commoners must not suffer, because if they do, then humanity will suffer.

Myanmar has termed the crisis as the country's internal issue.

Rohingyas are Bengali speaking - having migrated to the Arakans from districts of present day Bangladesh during the British period. Still, given the lack of security and primitive camp conditions in Bangladesh, many Rohingya are expected to travel by sea starting next month, when weather conditions on the Andean Sea improve, and try to pass through Thailand to seek sanctuary in Malaysia and Indonesia. The attempt did not work out but left a permanent gulf. Thailand needs to act fast if it wants to play a leadership role in a regional solution to save lives of Rohingya facing ethnic cleansing in Burma. A Rohingya was eligible to citizenship only if he were able to provide proof that his ancestors lived in Burma before 1823.

Even the non-refoulement principle excludes those refugees who may pose a danger to the security of the country in which they are present. The Rohingyas were also restricted to the Rakhine province, which is the new name for Arakans.

Faced with a spreading mudbath, the Rohingya have started building bamboo carpets to get over flooded land.

Mohammad Salimullah, one of the two Rohingya petitioners, said the authorities in New Delhi had always been helpful so he was hopeful the court would support the refugees.

Space at established refugee camps in Bangladesh has all but been exhausted, with new arrivals hacking away trees and other vegetation anywhere they can to erect shelters from the monsoon rain.

The latest exodus began after Rohingya militants attacked police posts there on August 25 and triggered a fierce military backlash.

Rohingyas have been trouble makers for Myanmar since decades.

The Rohingya refugees, a persecuted community of Muslims from Myanmar have fled the country in large numbers. With already 5 lakh refugees taking shelter, Bangladesh is in no position to take any more refugees. The West Bengal government had earlier planned to hand over United Nations refugee cards to the 24 children, but the programme at the Liluah home was cancelled after the Centre sent the missive to deport the Rohingyas.

"[Myanmar leader] Aung San Suu Kyi has given a statement on taking back Rohingyas. Can not comment on the government policy but we are helping them because they are being persecuted in Myanmar", Dattu said. "It shows our commitment", the home minister said after reciting a Sanskrit shloka, according to News18. But this is a chastened Aung speaking out after global condemnation.

"Any sovereign country is independent to take action against illegal immigrants".

"Many of the Rohingyas figure in the suspected sinister designs of ISI/ISIS [Islamic State] and other extremist groups who want to achieve their ulterior motives in India including that of flaring up communal and sectarian violence in sensitive areas of the country", the document added. The Centre has responded saying that it would place all intelligence inputs before SC on October 3 to prove its claim that Rohingyas are a security threat, reportedThe Times of India.
