HHS focuses on increased vaccination for new flu season

"It's really lifesaving; every year we see tens of thousands die from the flu, and then we see as many as a quarter of a million people who are hospitalized [nationwide] because of complications from the flu", Stevenson said. Like last season, the nasal mist vaccine is not available.

Roughly 105 children died previous year of the flu, and flu related hospitalizations have almost quadrupled - from 7,000 to 26,000 - since 2010.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services this morning announced its guidelines for this year's flu season, with focus this year placed on increasing the number of people vaccinated after statistics suggest little increase in those opting for the vaccine.

Data released Thursday showed that while there were slight increases in the vaccination rates among people most vulnerable to the flu - adults over age 50 - there were "mostly stagnant vaccination rates among all age groups", according to the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

In fact, when they looked at influences on the day of vaccination itself, mood was found to have an even greater impact - accounting for between 8% and 14% of the variability in antibody levels.

The St. Anthony medical staff encourages everyone to contact their healthcare provider with questions about the flu and the vaccine and to take the necessary precautions throughout the flu season. He says getting shots cannot only protect your co-workers, classmates, and neighbors, but also your longevity.

Overnight, five helicopters with night-vision and three planes tried combating the wildfire from above. Nine helicopters and nine fixed-wing aircraft along with 350 firefighters are now battling the flames.

On Thursday, the CDC also launched its seasonal flu vaccine campaign.

For those with egg allergies, the CDC says people who have experienced only hives after exposure to eggs can get any licensed flu vaccine that is appropriate for their age and health. During most seasons, the highest hospitalization rate was among adults age 65 years and older, followed by children younger than 5 years old.

At the global level, H3N2 and influenza B are the predominant seasonal flu strains, and in the most recent flu developments, Australia is still reporting high flu levels, led by H3N2, with high numbers of deaths in nursing homes and in healthy adults.

"That an extra two million Australians were likely to have a flu vaccination this year due to their availability through community pharmacy points to the success of the scheme, and the need to extend it further next year". Research showed that 57 percent of children who were severely ill with the flu had not gotten the flu vaccine.

On flu-related matters, officials said children between 6 months and 23 months old were the top group during the past season to receive vaccinations: 76.3 percent.

Fewer people died during the 2016-2017 season compared with the previous year, but the hospitalization rate almost doubled from the previous year, according to the CDC. "Our goal is to increase coverage for children of all ages". The participants also filled out a questionnaire about their mood the day they got the flu shot.
