Begusarai Stampede: Four Killed in Bihar; CM Nitish Kumar Announces Compensation

The tragic incident occurred on the banks of the Ganga river in Bihar's Begusarai district.

At least three persons have been killed and more than 10 others injured in a stampede in eastern Indian state of Bihar Saturday, police said.

Reports are rushing in from Bihar's Begusarai district, where almost four people were killed while severely injuring several others in a stampede during the Kartik puja celebrations.

The holy dips began at 2 am on Saturday, and the crowd surged and became uncontrollable by 4 am. "In addition to two SIs and one ASI, three Bihar Military Police (BMP) constables-Ruby, Puja and Monica Kumari- have also been placed under suspension", said the SP. He further added that the identities of the women have not been ascertained yet.

According to PTI, ADG (Headquarters) Sunil Kumar Singhal also said the deaths were caused due to suffocation. According to PTI, Begusarai SP Aditya Kumar said the women died of suffocation.

On the eve of Kartik Purnima, thousands of devotees gathered at the Simaran Ghat in Bihar's Begusarai district to take the holy dip in Ganga river.

"We are trying to ascertain the cause behind the stampede", Kumar said.
