Patriots claim tight end Martellus Bennett off waivers

Five other Patriots players are listed as questionable for the game, including tight end Martellus Bennett, who rejoined the team Thursday after being claimed off waivers from the Green Bay Packers.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported on Friday that the Packers released Bennett because he has a torn rotator cuff.

Bennett claims the Packers were trying to force him to "play thru a major injury".

Bennett said the Packers cleared his shoulder during a March exam when he joined them as a free agent following a one-year stint with the Patriots.

The New England Patriots officially have ruled out three starters for Sunday night's matchup with the Denver Broncos.

"After conversations with my family I'm pretty sure these next eight games will be the conclusion of my National Football League career", Bennett posted.

He opted to have surgery, but said Packers team doctor Patrick McKenzie made him feel uncomfortable when they discussed the injury.

In June the U.S. said it would withdraw, but the rules of the agreement state that this can not be done until 2020. Nicaragua, which was one of the last holdouts, in September announced it would join the accord.

Bennett, however, passed his physical with the Patriots on Friday and was on the practice field. They even gave me an xray as well.

After his starting quarterback was injured, Bennett tweeted during the Packers bye week that 2017 would be his final season.

Bennett has 24 catches for 233 yards on the season.Bennett's contract has two years remaining for about $14 million. I advised him to get the second opinions.

"The last medical conversation I was involved with in regards to Marty, they were talking about scheduling surgery", McCarthy said.

Asked if he didn't believe Bennett was "on the boat", Richard Rodgers said, "I really can't answer that".
