Shooting near elementary school kills at least three; children among injured

The shooter was also killed by police. Johnston said the child has been transported to the hospital, along with another child who was shot while riding in a truck. The violence moved to Rancho Tehama Elementary School, and children were wounded. There are at least seven crime scenes related to the incident.

"At this point the suspected shooter is deceased by law enforcement bullets", Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston told reporters.

Enloe Medical Center in Chico, more than 40 miles (64 km) southeast of the school, received five patients, and three of them were treated and released, hospital spokeswoman Natali Munoz-Moore said by phone.

It was "very clear" early on that "we had a subject that was randomly picking targets", he said.

About 100 students attend the school where the shooting took place, according to a school official. A man says his roommate is among the victims in Northern California and that his neighbor was the gunman.

Tehama, the community in which the shooting occurred, is about 210km north of Sacramento and has a population of just 3500. Police recovered a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns from the scene.

"The insane thing is that the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines", Flint said.
