Snow and cold expected on Vancouver Island this week

Winter weather is on the way for inland and eastern Vancouver Island, the Southern Gulf Islands and Greater Victoria, according to a special weather statement issued by Environment Canada.

Environment Canada says it if you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and travel plans, and carry an emergency kit and cell phone.

With the strong easterly low level winds, East Vancouver Island and Victoria will likely be the snowiest regions across the South Coast on Tuesday.

"The resulting weather will be a mixture of rain and snow beginning tonight (Monday) over most south coast communities", read the statement.

More of the white stuff is forecast to come down Tuesday, with five to 10 centimetres at higher elevations.

A break is expected Wednesday which is when most snow will melt before an Arctic front from B.C.'s Interior drops Thursday.

Snow is likely in elevated areas on Tuesday, and lower elevations can expect a mix of snow and rain. Significant but lesser amounts of snow are expected in Castlegar.

Environment Canada has a winter storm watch in effect for the West Kootenay, Boundary, Kootenay Pass and Elk Valley.

The watch affects parts of the Boundary, Elk Valley, Kootenay Lake and West Kootenay regions, predominately along Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton, and Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass.
