Kansas City Chiefs To Start Pat Mahomes in Week 17

Posted December 28, 2017

Rookie first-round pick Patrick Mahomes is going to get the start at quarterback, allowing Alex Smith to rest for the team's playoff game.

Of Mahomes, Reid said, "To have the opportunity to be in the room he's in is priceless".

Mahomes said he's been preparing like a starter all season, a byproduct of being the backup, even though he's accustomed to running the scout team in practice. He went in the third round to the Giants, who have yet to let him take a snap despite being 2-13 and out of the playoff hunt for half the season. But he is expecting to lead the Chiefs to their 10th win of the season. Every snap he gets is valuable, whenever he gets that chance of getting in there.

Mahomes was the first quarterback drafted by the Chiefs in the first round since Todd Blackledge in 1983, a maddening stretch of time for their long-suffering fan base.

Florida State actually might not be bowl eligible
FSU is expected to use around 3,000 of its bowl allotment 6,000 tickets, according to school officials. Florida State had preseason CFP hopes and had no expectation of being borderline bowl eligible .

Reid confirmed many younger players will get extended action in the finale, meaning Mahomes may not have the benefit of working with Pro Bowlers Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill and Kareem Hunt and one of the league's better offensive lines. Smith will enter the final year of his contract with Kansas City, and carries a cap hit of over $20 million. Kansas City has gotten hot of late en route to winning three straight games after losing six of the team's previous seven contests.

For the Chiefs, this move makes sense.

"I've done it this way before", he said, "and it's gone pretty well".
