Ex-Chelsea player set to become Liberia President

Atiku in his tweets urged Mr. Weah to lead the people of Liberia to prosperity.

"Indeed, he has also always impressed me as a focused, patriotic gentleman and a presidential material right from the day I presided over his inauguration as a Member of the Liberian Country Delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament on May 11, 2015".

He wrote "Congratulations to the people of Liberia on the successful election of their new President, Mr. George Weah".

"President Buhari also commends the Liberian people on the peaceful conduct of the historic presidential run-off election", he said, stressing that "this is another plus on Africa's democratic scoreboard". "We have a lot to do to accelerate the construction of Africa's future".

Sirleaf's office said it had set up a team "for the proper management and orderly transfer of executive power from one democratically elected president to another", adding that it included several ministers. With almost all polling places reporting, Unity Party's standard-bearer Joseph Boakai has congratulated the Coalition for Democratic Change candidate George Weah on his presumptive win of the December 26 runoff presidential election.

The President of Senegal, Macky Sall, also congratulated Weah on Twitter and wished him "much success".

The 51-year-old Weah, a senator who entered politics more than a decade ago, will take over in January.

According to official provisional results announced Thursday by the National Elections Commission, Weah accumulated 61.5 percent of the total valid votes with 98.1 percent of polling places reporting, while Vice President Boakai obtained 38.5 percent of the valid votes. He is the only African to win FIFA World Player of the Year.
