Brian Gutekunst succeeds Ted Thompson as Packers GM

Posted January 09, 2018

Gutekunst has spent the last 19 years with the Packers and has a background in player personnel.

The Packers have had a busy offseason so far, with former GM Ted Thompson moving to a new role as senior advisor to football operations and coach Mike McCarthy getting a two-year extension.

Gutekunst will be entering his 20th season with the Packers. The Houston Texans flew him in Saturday and planned to interview him for their vacancy on Sunday, but he took the job in Green Bay instead. He was promoted to his current position two years ago.

Gutekunst may not have been the Packers' first choice.

Seahawks fans can rest easy now knowing general manager John Schneider will be staying in Seattle. A promotion from within isn't surprising for Green Bay, but the team may have been interested in an outside hire before making the promotion.

The Packers have not officially announced a hiring.

The Packers had to tread through some drama. Signing just one player would be more active than Thompson, but Wood is likely hinting at Gutekunst looking to build the roster with a lot more veteran help.

He has been with the Packers since 1998, when he joined the team as a college scout. He also spent time in the scouting departments with the New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs.
