BMW X4 reinvented to take on Evoque

Posted February 15, 2018

It may be larger, but the new X4 is much lighter than the last model, as BMW has managed to trim 110 pounds of fat off the curb weight thanks to increased use of aluminium in the car's construction, resulting in a lower center of gravity that enhances the coupe SUV's cornering abilities.

BMW practically invented the crossover coupe with the launch of the X6 in 2007. The refreshed X4 will be bigger than the original, 3 inches longer than before, and bigger inside, with a 2.1-inch stretch in the wheelbase to 113.

The front seats have been redesigned, though BMW has not mentioned any updates to the X4's particularly flat and uncomfortable rear seats, except to say its passengers now have a bit more knee and leg room.

Globally, the new X4 will be offered with three gasoline and four diesel engine options, ranging in output from 184 horsepower and 360.

The X4's interior is a lot like the X3's. A 248-horsepower turbo-4 mated to an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive returns to power the X4 xDrive30i; a free-revving 355-hp turbo-6, 8-speed, and all-wheel drive propel the X4 M40i to 60 miles per hour in less than five seconds. This performance-orientated model produces 355bhp and manages 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds; economy of up to 31.4mpg and Carbon dioxide emissions of up to 213g/km are the trade-off. Boot space is rated at 525 litres with the rear seats up or 1430 litres with the seats down. A 10.25-inch touchscreen can be had along with a head-up display and three-zone climate control. Acceleration 0 - 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, top speed 250 km/h. It's 1.4 inches wider, at 75 inches, but it's also a modest 0.1 inches lower, at 63.8 inches.

A range of other engine options are being offered, spanning from a 135kW xDrive20i, a 185kW 30i, to a 140kW 20d, and 170kW 25d. That auto will get from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 4.6 seconds. Wheel sizes range from 19-21 inches.

All this is displayed on the iDrive system built into a voice control-enabled 6.5-inch display on the dash - this can be upgraded to a 10-inch screen with gesture control, too. Adaptive suspension is on the options list, as are more powerful M Sport brakes. Driver assist systems include blind spot detection, lane departure warning, daytime pedestrian protection, frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation, rear cross traffic alert for the rear and speed limit information. All engines will be mated to a standard eight-speed automatic that sends power to all four wheels via BMW's xDrive system. While it was never available in the Indian market, the second-generation BMW X4 is expected to make its debut in the country later this year.
