Pakistan killer, rapist sentenced to death

An anti-terrorism court on Saturday handed down death sentence on four counts to Imran Ali Naqshbandi on the charges of kidnapping, raping and brutal murdering seven-year-old Zainab Amin of Kasur after completing the trial in a record seven-day time.

Zainab was reported missing in mid-January and four days later, police found her body dumped Kasur district near the eastern city of Lahore.

Mohammad Imran, a local man who knew Zainab's family, pleaded guilty to raping and killing the little girl, reports The Associated Press.

Under Pakistani law, crimes that are considered to have spread terror in society can be charged as acts of terrorism.

On February 9, Imran was produced before ATC which made a decision to hold the trial in jail owing to security issues.

Journalists were stopped 500m from the prison, and only relatives of the victim were allowed in court for the hearing.

"I want him to be hanged publicly at the place where he took Zainab", Zainab's mother demanded.

Imran Ali has confessed to eight attacks on children in Pakistan, six of whom were murdered.

After Zainab's murder, the country united for a nationwide protest against government's inaction and it also led to media campaign after years of him being on the loose.

The Prosecutor General of Punjab province, Ihtesham Qadir said the man was also convicted of terrorism charges.

With whole country asking for explanations, police authorities recognized that in a year ago at least 11 children had been raped and all of m, except for two, had died in area of Kasur.

Ali is suspected of being the serial killer behind the murders of eight other minors in the district of Kasur.

Furthermore, according to police, the suspect confessed to carrying out the heinous crime, and a polygraph test was also conducted which came positive, following which the criminal has been shifted to an undisclosed location. "In this context he was correctly sentenced to death", he added.

The verdict was announced by ATC judge Sajjad Ahmad in the presence of Zainab's father Haji Muhammad Amin at Kot Lakhpat Jail amid tight security arrangements.
