Designer of Collapsed Bridge Also Worked On Skyway, Selmon

Two days before a 950-ton pedestrian bridge collapsed at Florida International University, an engineer with the company that designed it reportedly noticed cracking in the span.

The worker at FIGG Bridge Engineers left a landline voicemail for an employee of the Florida Department of Transportation on Tuesday, saying he saw some cracking on the bridge but was not concerned from a safety perspective, according to FDOT.

It added that "obviously" repairs will have to be done but clarified that "from a safety perspective" no issues were discovered.

However, it was not received until Friday - one day after the bridge collapsed and claimed at least six lives.

An attorney who represented the designer, builder, and general contractor that worked on a parking garage for Miami Dade College that collapsed in 2012, killing four people, said Thursday's bridge collapse may make some developers rethink the cast concrete method that was used.

The family of FIU student Alexa Duran has said that she was killed in the collapse, but police have not named her as being among the dead.

At a news conference Friday night, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) officials said they had just begun their investigation, and could not yet say whether any cracking contributed to the collapse. "She died when the bridge collapsed on top of her", her heart-broken father, Orlando Duran said.

FDOT told the media that engineers for the project had a permit that allowed them to close Tamiami Trail below the bridge but the design team reportedly never made that request.

"My little girl was trapped in the vehicle and couldn't get out". Police said the first two vehicles were removed Saturday.

Identical no longer after a year in space
Scott Kelly spent 340 days aboard the International Space Station between 2015 and 2016. Bailey said she was concerned the findings were being "sensationalised".

Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez says DNA may be needed to confirm some victims' identities, along with fingerprints and family photographs. At the time however, the engineer had not deemed it an immediate safety concern.

Florida International University officials said they knew about the crack in the pedestrian bridge just a few days before it collapsed. Pedro Munilla, one of MCM's vice presidents, has been an avid contributor to prominent politicians, including Florida US Sen.

The transportation agency described Pate as "FIGG's lead engineer responsible for the FIU pedestrian bridge project" and part of the walkway's "design build team".

Maurice Kemp, deputy mayor of Miami-Dade County, said today that the primary goal is to remove all victims and cars in a "dignified and respectful manner".

The FIU-Sweetwater UniversityCity Bridge's span weighed 950 tons and was meant to connect the school's campus to the adjoining Sweetwater neighborhood, home to many FIU students. "FIGG has done good work for us here in CT".

Scheduled to open in 2019, the bridge would have provided safe passage over a canal and six lanes of traffic and created a showpiece architectural feature connecting the campus of FIU with the community of Sweetwater, where many students live.

"A review of OSHA records, meanwhile, shows MCM has been fined for 11 safety violations in the past five years totaling more than $50,000 after complaints involving its Florida work sites".

At least one MCM project resulted in a lawsuit concerning safety.
