Sixers star Joel Embiid taken to hospital after collision with Markelle Fultz

Philadelphia center Joel Embiid went to the locker room in the second quarter of the 76ers' game against the New York Knicks after a nasty collision with teammate Markelle Fultz.

Embiid was wobbly heading off the court but the Sixers announced the big man suffered a simple facial contusion. While the 76ers initially said the All-Star center went through concussion protocol but did not have a concussion, they said after the game that he was taken to a hospital for additional testing.

The former number three overall pick took to Instagram whilst lying in a hospital bed, posting a story captioned "not good".

Philadelphia is only within a half-game of Cleveland for the third spot and could end up not facing them if the team manages to stay within fourth or fifth place - as the Cavs seem fated to face the sixth-place Washington Wizards with seven games left in the schedule.

Pompey added Embiid won't travel with the 76ers during their two-game road trip against the Atlanta Hawks on Friday and Charlotte Hornets on Sunday.

Embiid immediately hit the floor as the entire city of Philadelphia held it's breath.

Since the calendar turned to 2018 Embiid has missed just two games, January 29 against Milwaukee and February 14 against Miami, with the first being the second game of a back-to-back.

Embiid is the Sixers' leader in points, rebounds and blocks, averaging 22.9 points, 11 boards and 1.8 blocks per game. "My heart dropped. He's a tough guy".
