Buckingham Palace confirmed the news Tuesday, releasing the following statement: "His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London this afternoon, for planned surgery on his hip which will take place tomorrow".
The Duke stepped down from his public duties last summer, but occasionly does still attend events with the Queen.
Prince Philip was admitted at King Edward VII Hospital in central London earlier in the day. He missed the time-honored Maundy service on Thursday at St. George's Chapel, as well as Easter services with the Queen on Sunday, due to "trouble with his hip".
Prior to December of 2017, Prince Philip had held the position of Colonel of the Grenadier Guards since 1975.
Philip, or the Duke of Edinburgh as he is known in Britain, retired from public life last August, quipping at the time that he was no longer able to "stand up much". Last November, royal expert Kate Nicholl told ET that Prince Harry's special bond with his grandfather is behind both the timing and venue for his upcoming nuptials.
