White House says North Korea is willing to talk denuclearization

According to CNN, the talks are being led by Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director Mike Pompeo, using intelligence back channels, and his team has met North Korean officials in a third country.

But Pyongyang has not broken its public silence on the summit, which United States officials say is being planned for May.

The announcement comes after a year of tension between the U.S., North Korea and South Korea.

US and North Korean officials have reportedly been trying to nail down a location for the summit, with the North Koreans pushing for Pyongyang and the Americans calling for a more neutral location, like Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. "If there were such talks, we think it's a positive move".

Mr Trump said: "We're moving along very nicely with North Korea".

The talks between intelligence officials are laying the groundwork for a meeting between Pompeo and his North Korea counterpart, the head of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, in advance of the leaders' summit.

"The US has confirmed that Kim Jong Un is willing to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", a Trump administration official told The Wall Street Journal and Washington Post on Sunday. The representatives of the U.S. and North Korea have already met in a third country. "What we will see next is the exchanges of presidential envoys between the U.S. and North Korea". It is more likely that the North's United Front Department would be in charge...

Both Koreas held working-level talks over the weekend to discuss establishing a direct telephone link between their leaders and other communication issues ahead of the April 27 inter-Korean summit.

Speaking at Duke University in North Carolina, Haley said, "When the president ends up speaking with Kim, the conversation has to be about denuclearizing".

CNN said that once they agree upon a location for the summit, officials will then work on targeting a date and setting the agenda for the talks.
