Major League Baseball will make its first foray into Europe next season with the biggest possible splash: by showcasing the sport's heavyweights.

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will play a pair of regular-season games next June at London's Olympic Stadium, MLB announced on Tuesday. MLB, which has previously staged regular-season contests in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Japan and Australia, will return to London for another series in 2020, with the participating teams yet to.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has today unveiled plans for the historic London Series 2019, which will take place at the London Stadium next June.

It's the first time since 2002 Boston and NY have met with the two best records in all of baseball. "So fans can expect intense competition during what will surely be a great few days in London".

Her career has brought her to the United Kingdom twice, where she acted as the chief of the London station. All the negative headlines suggest that her confirmation hearing this week will not be a walk in the park.

Baseball is following in the footsteps of American football, which has regularly held National Football League (NFL) games in England since 2007.

The Red Sox will be the home team for both games, set for June 29 and June 30.

"All the hard work has paid off", said Khan, describing it as an "historic" partnership.

If this were old school baseball, there's a pretty good chance a Red Sox player might get plunked this series as a retaliation for Joe Kelly nailing Tyler Austin. This series will surely be the most significant global event to date for Major League ball. "So we understand there will be a lot of excitement around it", said Yankees manager Aaron Boone on Sunday. "We look forward to welcoming Major League Baseball, teams and fans to London Stadium for the first year of what we hope to be a fruitful, long term partnership".
