Kansas Sheriff’s Deputies Killed In Confrontation With Inmate

King was a 13-year veteran of the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office.

Police say it is possible that King and the other slain deputy, 35-year-old Patrick Rohrer, were shot with their own firearm, but police gave no other details.

Rohrer died shortly after the shooting Friday.

Officials identified the deputies that died in the shooting as Patrick Rohrer, 35, and Theresa King, 44.

The suspect also was shot and was operated on at the hospital. Terry Zeigler, the police chief of Kansas City, Kansas, said at a news conference on Saturday that as far as he knew, the man was in stable condition.

A sheriff's deputy was killed and another was critically wounded Friday when an inmate being transported to a court hearing in Kansas somehow got ahold of a weapon and shot them, authorities said. Authorities also have not released any information about the suspect or the extent of his injuries.

Bailiff said the incident occurred in a "caged" area outside a courthouse and there was no danger to the community.

Several law enforcement departments offered words of support and prayers for Wyandotte County on social media.

Kansas City police spokesman Zac Blair said officers were speaking to witnesses about shooting.

Gov Jeff Colyer was briefed on the incident as he arrived to a congressional forum hosted by the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.

The Olathe Police Department, Raymore Police Department in Missouri and the Jackson County Sheriff's Officer in Missouri tweeted similar heartfelt messages. Looking out a window, he saw three people on the ground in a parking lot behind the building, Garcia told the Kansas City Star.

The Fraternal Order of Police in Kansas City, Kansas, said in a statement: 'We are praying for our friends at the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Officer, their families, friends and our entire blue family. He also is facing charges in the first-degree murder of a 55-year-old woman on December 26, 2017, in Kansas City, Mo.
