Netflix captures most Emmy nods title from HBO

Samira Wiley and Ryan Eggold will be front and centre Thursday, July 12 at 11:25 a.m. ET/8:25 a.m. PT to announce the 2018 Emmy Awards nominees. That's because the streaming giant put an end to the premium cable channel's 17-year streak of garnering the most total nominations.

The nominees for best drama series were The Handmaid's Tale; Game of Thrones; This Is Us; The Crown; The Americans; Stranger Things; and Westworld.

The 2018 Emmy Awards nominations came out today, and of course, many fan favorites were left off of the list.

Donald Glover's "Atlanta" was the top comedy nominee with 16 bids, poised to take advantage of this year's absence of three-time victor "Veep". The Rock's Ballers on HBO was nominated for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series. Lena Headey, who plays their sister Cersei Lannister, also earned a nomination for supporting actress in a drama series.

On the comedy side, "Veep" and its star are on an extended hiatus, so this category is wide open for "Atlanta", "Barry", "black-ish", "Curb Your Enthusiasm, "GLOW", "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", "Silicon Valley" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt".

One show that stars a pair of local natives and has been nominated in the past was shut out in every major category.

The fantasy dragons-and-swords saga, which already has 38 Emmys under its belt, is not expected back on screens until next year.

Competing with Moss, Oh and Russell for lead drama actress are Claire Foy for "The Crown", Tatiana Maslay of "Orphan Black" and Evan Rachel Wood of "Westworld".
