Rare Celestial treat: Longest total Lunar Eclipse of century falls tomorrow

Posted July 27, 2018

Sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere will light the moon in a dramatic fashion, turning it red.

Although it is expected to last 103 minutes, those in the United Kingdom and Ireland will not be able to see the start of the lunar eclipse as the moon will still be below the horizon. This is why total lunar eclipses are also known as Blood Moons.

The eclipse will start at 11:13pm on Friday and end at 5:30am on Saturday in Bangladesh time.

The space agency said Nigeria, like most of Africa, the Middle East, southern Asia and the Indian Ocean region would witness a total Lunar Eclipse on the 27th of July 2018.

Here's everything you need to know about the astronomical phenomenon.

The moon orbits, or goes around the Earth. That way you can see the moon move full into the Earth's shadow.

Even though the Earth will be lined up directly between the moon and the sun, the moon will not be blacked out completely.

It will be visible from the time the moon appears around 9pm in the UK.

"The maximum of the eclipse occurs at 21.21 BST, but the upper edge of the Moon won't rise from Belfast until 21:27 BST". We will have to wait for May 26, 2021, to view the next total lunar eclipse in Singapore.

Every time there is an eclipse, the moon passes through the Earth's shadow, but it doesn't always pass through the same part of the shadow. Blue light is scattered, leaving only red.

NASA, meanwhile, has called out social media hoaxers claiming that Mars will appear as big as the moon during the eclipse. In fact, this phenomenon of the moon appearing small is called micro moon. The Moon will be gradually covered by the Earth's shadow and the totality phase will begin at 1h 00m IST on July 28. A blood moon is the term for a total lunar eclipse due to the reddish colour of the moon. A lunar eclipse can last for a few hours.

Nasa says Earth will experience 230 lunar eclipses during the 21st Century. One should avoid alcohol, non-vegetarian foods, high protein foods etc. Cooking, eating and drinking are avoided during lunar eclipses in India as people are superstitious about food "going bad" during eclipses. And what about other types of eclipses?

Earth's Umbra (a shadow's dark core) is responsible for a total lunar eclipse.

Both the moon and Mars will be visible to the naked eye (although binoculars might add to the occasion), with the moon rising at 8.50pm in London.
