After a lot of unnecessary hype, Motorola simply announced the Moto Z3 smartphone at its headquarters in Chicago yesterday. Gaurang Telang, Motorola's product manager for Flagships and Innovation, confirmed to Engadget that the 5G Mod "won't be the last Mod", and that Moto Mods would "absolutely" continue to be part of the brand's mobile strategy for the foreseeable future. Once the 5G Moto Mod clicks into place on your Moto Z3, it will take over all modem functions, both 4G and 5G, from the phone.
As far as the design of the phone is concerned, the new Moto Z3, which is the successor to the Z2 - looks a lot like the Z3 Play. The screen has 2.5D curved glass, and it's protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 technology. As for the price, the flagship model will be available for just $480 which is quite affordable except that the processor onboard is outdated. It is around 6.7mm thick. Moto Z3 cameras also come with Google Lens integration for object recognition. The new smartphone, which sits above the Moto Z3 Play that debuted in June, comes with a splash-resistant build and delivers a pure Android experience.
Moto Z3 is powered by 2.35GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with Adreno 540 GPU. It is disappointing to see a smartphone launching in 2018 with SD 835, but it is better than the Z3 Play which runs on Snapdragon 636 SoC.
Moto Z3 comes in one colour of "ceramic black".
Motorola Moto Z3 now official with a 5G Moto Mod for Verizon's network
Motorola has added a microSD card slot as well for storage expansion up to 2TB.
Coming to the cameras, there are 12MP dual cameras on the rear with f/1.7 aperture and an 8MP single selfie camera on the front with f/2.0 aperture. There is an 8-megapixel image sensor at the front for selfies with 1.12 micron pixels and 84-degree field of view. Motorola hasn't specified battery capacity, but says it'll last a full day. The Moto Z3 comes with Turbopower support. Strangely, the Moto Z3 appears to lack an inbuilt 5G antenna. It will be running on the latest Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and should get the Android P update later this year.
But the nation's largest wireless carrier by subscribers essentially outed its plans with the debut of the Motorola's Moto Z3, which will get a "mod" attachment accessory that will let it tap into the 5G network early next year. You've seen this phone before, or at least most of it, as it's nearly exactly the same as the Moto Z3 Play, which launched back in June.
Motorola promises the 5G-ready Z3 can download 90 Spotify songs in 10 seconds.
