Changes Are Coming To The Oscars

They have also announced that a new category is being designed around achievement in popular film, and that they are planning a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast. More often than not, the biggest films of the year are shut out from the main award categories, with the exception of the technical categories like makeup and special effects.

Other planned changes include the televised Oscars show being cut down to three hours (an hour shorter than usual). Some will be presented during commercial breaks at the Dolby Theatre, with the key moments being edited into the broadcast later. That same year, the Academy also reinstated a "preferential ballot" for Best Picture voting that allows members to rank films according to preference in that category, rather than simply picking one victor. Either way, expect this to shake up the Oscar race in future. While the details of this new category have not been disclosed yet, it's safe to assume that nominees will be films that managed to please not only critics, but audiences as well. Ganis, who returned to the board this year, served as Academy President from 2005-2009.

The next Oscars broadcast will be as announced, February 24, 2019.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Academy's board of governors came together on Tuesday to figure out how they can add some pep to their golden-glazed step for a culture that changes rapidly by the hour.

The new 2020 air date moves the telecast from a previously announced date later in the month.

While we're at it, let's get more categories added and go full blown MTV Movie Awards up in this motherfucker. Dawn Hudson, it has been revealed that Outstanding Popular Film will be a new award at next year's ceremony, one of three changes to the show shared Wednesday.
