Officials warn again of air health in smoky Seattle

Posted August 21, 2018

Thick smoke from wildfires across the west and northwest are plaguing multiple states, with thick smoke and risky air quality, including Colorado.

Air pollution in the Tacoma area Monday was worse than some of the world's most populated cities like Bejing and Delhi, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's air-quality index.

"Wholesale improvement to air quality is not likely until midweek". Check the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency's website for the most recent conditions. At least 16 flights at Kelowna International Airport were cancelled or delayed on Sunday, while cancellations were also reported at airports in Penticton and Castlegar.

The free "OregonAir" app uses smiling and frowning emojis to show what air quality conditions look like in different parts of the state.

Officials recommend staying inside with windows closed and air conditioners set to recirculate. "If it's not fitted correctly, all it does is make it harder to breathe", she said. Smoke may not affect all areas at all times.

Video showed the Horizon Air Q400 doing large loops and other unsafe maneuvers as the sun set on the Puget Sound. A Coast Guard spokeswoman said the agency was responding to a report of a smoke plume and possible plane crash.

The poor air quality can be especially risky for people with preexisting heart conditions.

The Shovel Lake fire is considered to be one of the highest priorities for firefighters.

"That smoke concentration is just going to increase on Monday and into Tuesday as well, as we await a trough of low pressure to push in during the middle of this week that will hopefully clear some of the air out along coastal British Columbia".

The north end of Vancouver Island is covered by the advisory as well. Authorities believe five of the six were sparked by lightning and the sixth by human activity.
