'Infowars' host reaches for spotlight outside Senate hearing

Posted September 07, 2018

Alex Jones, the right-wing conspiracy theorist and talk show host, walks to a hearing to watch the leaders of Twitter and Facebook testify on Capitol Hill, in Washington today.

Twitter faced a lot of pressure from users to take action against Jones before the company issued that one-week suspension. Twitter said Jones posted a video that violates the company's policy against "abusive behaviour".

The party-line senator was giving an interview outside the congressional hearings on Facebook and Twitter on Wednesday when he was ambushed by the InfoWars host.

Jones insisted that Rubio acknowledge his presence and importance. Jones mocked Darcy during the confrontation, predicting the CNN reporter would "go to Twitter and say, "He's bullying me!" Martin Heinrich used one of Jones' debunked conspiracy theories as an example in questioning Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg. "I'll handle it myself", Rubio said. Jones was subsequently suspended for a week over the violations, but not banned outright.

Rubio claimed to have no idea who Jones was. I know cocktail shrimp with more backbone than him.

As Rubio spoke with the press about his concerns over foreign interference in social media, Jones repeatedly interrupted, asking him "what about the Democrats purging conservatives?".

Argentina burns reserves, asks for early International Monetary Fund help as peso crashes
Mr Macri's decision to ask the International Monetary Fund for help in May was criticised by many within his country. The government expects Argentina's economy to contract 1 percent in 2018 but grow by at least 1.5 percent next year.

The heated exchange escalated as the senator told Jones to "get your hand off me, don't touch me".

Rubio tried to ignore Jones' rants, but Jones called Rubio a "frat boy" and touched him on the shoulder.

Jones then patted Rubio on the back, prompting a sharp response. Jones asked. "I didn't say that", Rubio replied. He made an unexpected appearance in the front row of the audience at Wednesday's hearing and was also seen milling about the hallways outside the room, yelling about anti-conservative bias and declaring that he had come to "face my accusers". "Rubio just threatened to physically take care of me". The smear has since been removed from YouTube. While high-profile cases of highly offensive content being taken down gets a lot of attention, he added, content moderation "continues to silence" the voices of people around the world struggling to be heard.
