Vikings Release Dan Carlson, Sign Free Agent Kicker Dan Bailey

Posted September 19, 2018

The Vikings' decision to boot Carlson comes after he missed three field goals in Minnesota's 29-29 tie with the Packers Sunday, including the potential game-winning kick in overtime.

"Yeah, well, that's life", Zimmer added.

Bailey was a Pro Bowl selection in 2015 and has a career-long field goal of 56 yards.

Between all the games Sunday, there were nine games that had a missed field goal or failed PAT.

But it's much better that Minnesota get their kicking situation sorted out now instead of having to potentially deal with another heartbreaking miss in a future playoff game.

He also retired trailing in the fifth set of his Australian Open quarter-final against Marin Cilic in January. The game started on an ominous note for Nadal as del Potro broke his serve in the first game of the first set.

The Minnesota Vikings have signed kicker Dan Bailey, owner of the second-best field goal percentage in National Football League history and replacement for rookie Daniel Carlson.

The 30-year-old spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Cowboys and played in 108 career games.

Only Zane Gonzalez performed worse than Carlson: He missed two field goals and two PATs. In the season opener against the 49ers on September 9, Carlson converted his only field goal attempt, from 48 yards, plus three extra points. However, he had struggled with injuries late last season as it impacted his play on the field missing five out of 12 field goal attempts in the last month that pushed him below 84 percent in his career. There was no third season for Forbath in Minnesota.

Carlson was awarded the job when the Vikings let Kai Forbath go on August 20, and Carlson pulled two field goal tries wide left in a preseason game four days later.

"That's water off a duck's back", Zimmer said. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Bailey turned down four other job offers.
